Warning - fraudulent ‘phishing’ emails

Our clients are telling us that they are receiving fraudulent ‘phishing’ emails purporting to be from HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC).

These emails allude to a tax repayment being available and asks the recipient to click on a link and enter their bank account details. The emails are sent by fraudsters to gain access to the recipient’s personal information in order to carry out online or identity fraud.

HM Revenue & Customs have confirmed that they will never notify taxpayers of tax repayments due by email and that examples of these phishing emails should be forwarded to them at phishing@hmrc.gsi.gov.uk.

If you have received an email that appears to be from HMRC please call your usual M+A Partners contact or any member of our tax team for advice.
